BurgerKing Re-Zoning
On June 26, 2000, the Duluth City Council voted not to rezone the
intersection (described below). Eckenberg, Fena, Hogg, Ness, Stewart
and Stover opposed rezoning, Gilbert abstained due to a conflict of
interest with his employer (a law firm), Edwards and Stenberg
supported rezoning. The alert below is retained for historical interest, see the news paper articles on the news page, an editorial opposing rezoning before the vote and the summary afterwards for details. Good News!! The Duluth City Council--in response to public outcry--has decided to accept public comments about the proposed rezoning of property at the northeast corner of Boundary Avenue and West Skyline Parkway on Monday, June 26, 6 p.m., City Council Chambers (3rd floor, city hall). Here is the issue: Nick Patronas and Dan Thomson have asked that this land--located on the northeast corner of West Skyline Parkway and Boundary Avenue--be rezoned from residential to commercial so they can build a gas station, convenience store, and Burger King. There is already a convenience store and restaurant on the Proctor side of Boundary Avenue, as well as McDonalds, Holiday, and hotel on the other side of I-35. These are all in Proctor. Just because Proctor allows commercial development in this area doesn't mean that Duluth has to do the same!! This area is the Gateway to Duluth! Do we want to welcome visitors to our city with a solid strip of fast food joints and gas stations? And what about the Comprehensive Plan? Do we really want to be rushing through a lot of rezonings when we're about to embark on a Comprehensive Plan? PLEASE help out by attending the council meeting and urge the City Council to say NO to this request!! Monday, June 26, 6 p.m., City Council Chambers (3rd floor, city hall). |
